AN OBITUARY OF HARRISON FLEENER

Henry Harrison Fleener, son of Samuel and Amanda McFarlin Fleener, was born February 17, 1858, in Sugar Creek township at which place he resided 44 years. He departed this life March 18, at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 1 day. He was stricken with pneumonia on Feb. 13 and was taken to St. Francis hospital where he received the best of medical care. His faithful wife, brothers and sister were with him during his illness and were at his bedside when he passed peacefully away, realizing the end was near.

He was married to Peninah Arabelle Stanley, October 17, 1883 and although they were not blessed with children of their own they took into their hearts and home John Miller when he was five years old and cared for him as tenderly as if he were their own until his death at the age of 23 years.

They lived on a farm near Searsboro until 1902, when they moved to their farm near Grinnell, later moving into Grinnell which has been Mr. Fleener's home ever since.

She preceded him in death Oct. 28, 1925.

On August 11, 1927 he married Lillie Mae Griffith who has been faithful and cared for him tenderly until the last. He was one of a family of nine children, five preceding him in death. Those living are M.B. of Searsboro, S.L. and Nancy Gregson of New Sharon.

He was loyal to his church, faithful in attendance and a liberal contributor.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge for fifty-four years, and was a charter member of the Searsboro lodge. He was also a member of the Elks.

His life was one of kindness, of love, and of supreme service to mankind.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, March 20, from the Baptist church, of which he had been a faithful attendant, conducted by Rev. William Welsh. The active pallbearers, all relatives, were Arthur Fleener, Vern Stanley, Henry Fleener, Aaron Copeland, H.R. Fleener and Glenn Stanley. The same pallbearers had served at the funeral of his wife in 1925.

Honorary pallbearers, chosen from among his oldest friends, included S.L. Raffety, Frank Binegar, George Manor, W.R. Scandrett, Pearl Garner, and Will Schooley.

A male quartet from the college in charge of D.E. Peck furnished fine music.

The Odd Fellows were in charge of the services at the grave in Hazelwood.

Mr. Fleener was highly respected during all the many years of his life in this community. His devoted wife and all the members of his family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
