Grinnell (IA) Herald; May 20, 1914

MRS. MATILDA ELLEN SCHOOLEY

Matilda Ellen Hiatt Schooley was born June 27, 1843, in Henry county, Ind., and died May 1, 1914, at her home in Grinnell, Iowa.

While yet a child she came with her parents to Henry county, Iowa, moving later to Poweshiek county and settling near Blue Point.

She was married September 2, 1860 to Elihu Schooley and they have made their home during the entire 54 years of married life in Poweshiek county living for the most part about five miles northeast of Lynnville.

Six daughters came into this home to bless the lives of the father and mother. The oldest, Rosa Schooley Cope, near 25 years ago went to be with Jesus. Jennie Schooley has never gone out from the parental roof but has stood heart and hand with her mother in caring for the other children and their father who has been afflicted for a number of years. Mattie Schooley, Mrs. Wm. Watkins, Mrs. E.P. Adams, and Mrs. Harve Saville have always lived near and were not only with their mother at the time of her death but were ever ready to lend a helping hand and have spent many happy hours in the home.

Mrs. Schooley was really only sick about 48 hours. The children had felt for some time that she was gradually failing and when disease took hold of the body her heart was too weak to overcome it, and Thursday evening about 7 o'clock she went away. We truly feel of her as of the one of old, "She has done what she could."

Since moving to Grinnell, she has been unable to get away from home much but no sacrifice was too great for her to make for the husband, children or grand-children. If one of them suffered she suffered with them and the greatest desire was that they might all live right and finally be an unbroken family around the throne of God.

She has been for years a member of the Friends church and loved her church dearly but truly loved Jesus more for He had become to her a personal savior.

Her home was always open to God's children and many a weary soldier for Jesus has rested and been refreshed there.

She leaves to mourn their loss not only the husband and five daughters and three sons-in-law, but eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, one sister, Mary Howell, and two brothers, Ahijah and James Hiatt, the brothers and sisters in the church, and a host of friends.

The funeral was in charge of Jospeh Sopher, her pastor, assisted by Miss Smith, a former pastor. Burial in Grinnell cemetery.
