ELIHU H. SCHOOLEY

Elihu H. Schooley, son of Wm. and Anne Schooley, was born in Michigan, Dec. 12, 1834, and died at his home in Grinnell, Jan. 22, 1916. When but a babe he moved with his parents to Indiana, and lived there until entering manhood, when he came with the family to Iowa, settling in Poweshiek county.

On Sept. 2, 1860, he was united in marriage to Matilda Ellen Hiatt, and his entire life since has been spent in Poweshiek county. In 1876 they settled on the old home place near Searsboro and lived there until 1900, when they moved to Grinnell and have resided there ever since. Six daughters came to this home to bless the lives of father and mother. The oldest, Rosa Schooley Cope, nearly 27 years ago went to be with Jesus. Jennie Schooley, who has remained in the home and so tenderly cared for the father during the years of his affliction; Mattie Schooley, Mrs. Wm. Watkins, Mrs. E.P. Adams, and Mrs. Harve Saville, have always lived near and were not only with their father at the time of his death but were every ready to lend a helping hand and have spent many happy hours in the home.

On July 19, 1892, he was stricken with paralysis and has been afflicted ever since, and on Jan. 22, 1916, received another stroke which resulted in his death, his last sickness only lasting about 5 hours. His wife preceded him to the better world May 21, 1914.

Besides the children he leaves eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one brother, Webster Schooley of Grinnell, to mourn their loss.

He was a member of the Friends church and was a faithful attendant as long as health permitted, and died in the faith that had so wonderfully sustained him through life.

The funeral was held at the home on Prairie street, in charge of Rev. Joseph Sopher; interment in Hazelwood cemetery.
