Evelyn V. Puls, 81, of Grinnell, died of cancer, Friday, January 25, 2002 at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church near Malcom, with the Rev. Herb Knudten officiating. Music will be provided by organist Teresa Ziegenmeyer, pianist, Barry Williams and vocalist, Sherry Brooks. Casket bearers will be Jim Pefferman; David, Joseph, Richard and Timothy Puls; Bert Roach; and Denny Rook. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning at 9 a.m. Friday. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

She was born March 2, 1920 in Grinnell to Andrew and Zella Rayl Doud. She was raised in Grinnell and was a 1938 graduate of Grinnell High School. She was married to John L. Puls Feb. 22, 1940. The couple farmed near Grinnell and Malcom and moved to Lake Ponderosa near Montezuma in 1988. She moved to Grinnell in 1998 and resided at Brookside South. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served in the Altar Guild and the church's women's society.

She is survived by four sons, Richard of Grinnell, Joseph of Lake Ponderosa, Timothy of Indianapolis, Ind., and David of Norfolk, Va.; four daughters, Patricia Roach of Moreno Valley, Calif., Rosemary Rook of Grinnell, Joy Pefferman of Joplin, Mo., and Mary Puls of Grinnell; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Barbara Humphrey of Oskaloosa. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one daughter, Kathleen Puls; and one brother, Dan Doud, Jr.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grinnell Regional Hospice or the Trinity Lutheran Altar Guild.
