Doud, Mahlon McClellan 1901-1954

Mahlon Doud, son of Peter and Elizabeth Head Doud was born March 19, 1901 on a farm south of Grinnell and with the exception of one year's residence in the state of Washington, spent his entire life in and around Grinnell. He passed away at the Community Hospital on September 7, 1954, after an extended illness.

On May 2, 1931, he was united in marriage with Viola F. Jewell. To this union three children were born- one daughter, Mrs. Eugene Campbell, and two sons, William and James of Grinnell. On December 31, 1931, he joined the Grinnell Fire Department and was an active member until Oct. 11, 1948 when he was placed on the honorary list because of ill health. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for many years, also a member of the Woodmen Lodge at one time, and a member of the Eagle's Lodge for a short time.

His father, mother, brother, Will, two sisters, Dolly, who passed away in infancy and Mary Jane Wallace, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, three children, two grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Perry Malloy of Macon, Missouri and Mrs. Ida Lincoln of Grinnell, three brothers, Peter and Clarence of Grinnell and Dan of Des Moines, besides a host of relatives and friends. He was a good husband and father, friend and neighbor.

Reverend DeLong conducted the funeral service at the Methodist Church on September 11, 1954. Music was furnished by Mrs. Dolph Miller who sang "Beyond The Sunset" and "It Is No Secret", accompanied by Mrs. R. H. Auman at the organ. Pallbeareres were nephews Virgil and Roger Lincoln, Virgil Doud, Dan Doud, Jr., Russell Wallace and Webb Wallace. He was laid to rest at Hazelwood Cemetery.
