John W. Gilbert was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, March 19th, 1872. At the age of ten years he moved with his parents to Grinnell, Iowa, where he resided until his death. In the year 1895 he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Faircloth of Grinnell. To this union were born two children one of whom died in infancy.

For five years John Gilbert has been afflicted with tuberculosis of the stomach. During this long sickness he was patient to the end. He departed this life May 1st at 3:30 in the afternoon.

He leaves a wife and little daughter, his aged parents, four brothers and four sisters to mourn his loss.

He gave his heart to God at the age of nineteen years and has lived a devoted christian life. Lately he expressed his desire to be baptized and to partake of the communion and about three weeks ago this was done and he was received into the United Presbyterian church.

The funeral services were held in the U.P. chapel on Tuesday, May 3, the pastor, W.W. Woodburn, preaching from Matthew XI:28 and the remains were laid to rest in Hazelwood cemetery.

The relatives desire to express their thanks to the many friends who so kindly assisted them in this their bereavement.
