DIED AT COUNTY HOME

John V. Gilbert was born in Belmont county, Ohio, July 29, 1839, and died at the Poweshiek county home January 28, 1916, aged 76 years, 6 months and 29 days. When a small boy he moved to Iowa. In 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Janette Chipps, of Mercer county, Missouri. To this union a son and daughter were born, Harvey Gilbert, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Mrs. Mollie Conley, who was with her father during his last illness.

Mrs. Gilbert died when her children were small and the father kept the children and two step-children together, making a home for them until they were grown.

The deceased is survived by his son and daughter, and the two step-children, a brother at Grinnell and a sister, Mrs. Davis living near Montezuma.

Funeral services were held at the county home, on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. George Blagg, assisted by Rev. J.I. Nicholson and a ladies' quartet from the Christain church. Interment was made in the city cemetery.

NOTE: Mrs. "Mollie" Conley in above obit is an error. She is Mrs. Ollie (Olive) Conley.
