BERKLEY GOULD

James Berkley Gould, 82, of 925 Seeland Dr., Grinnell, died Monday, Dec. 16,, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. A. Cliff Bevins officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud, and vocalist was Marvin E. Kelley.

Pallbearers were Jeffrey, Bradley and Phillip Tharp; Roger, Mickey and Robbie Freeborn; and Jon C. Thomson. Honorary bearers were Willis Allen, Denny Gould, O.R. "Swede" Peterson, Robert Thompson, Herb Borkenhagen, Thomas Little, Rick Teckenburg, Eugene Freeborn and Harvey Vail.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The son of Delbert E. and Celia Jane Miller Gould, he was born Juy 10, 1909 on a farm near Liscomb. He attended rural school.

He was married to E. Ruth Clindinin June 26, 1937, in Marshalltown. The couple farmed for a year near Albion and for six years near Ewart. They came to Grinnell in 1946.

For five years Mr. Gould was employed by One Minute Washing Machine Co. in Kellogg, and in 1951 joined the Maytag Company in Newton where he worked until his retirement in 1972. For a few years he was employed by the Grinnell-Newburg School District as a mail carrier.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Grinnell.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth; his son, W. James of Grinnell; three daughters, Kay Tharp, Judy Freeborn and Karen Thomson, all of Grinnell; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wilbur (Dib) and Keith, both of Marshalltown; and one sister, Lois Paxton of Union. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George, Raymond and Frank.
