Marengo (IA) Republican; Nov. 15, 1922

WORLD WAR VETERAN CALLED HOME

Jay Sherman Benton, oldest son of Minnie and Emery Benton was born in Brooklyn, Iowa, January 7, 1887, and died at the Fiser home near Marengo, November 8, 1922, aged 35 years, 9 months and 1 day.

His boyhood days were spent in Brooklyn, where he attended school.

In the spring of 1913 he moved with his parents to a farm near Victor, where he resided until he was called to the service of his country in the fall of 1917. He enlisted in the 133rd infantry, Company G. He spent one year in Camp Cody and Camp Dodge and one year in France, returning home April 4, 1919.

On April 24, 1919 he was married to Miss Winnie Fiser. To them was born one son, who preceded him in death. His illness was of short duration, altho his death was hourly expected. It came as a great shock to his relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, to mourn his loss, a father, mother, and two brothers, Guy of Brooklyn and Delbert of Hartwick and five sisters, Mrs. Vernon Perry of Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Harry Gwinn of Victor; Mrs. Walter Torrance of Hartwick; Mrs. Floyd Fiser of Victor and Zavie at home, and a large circle of friends.

The funeral was held at the Ohio church, Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. Interment was made in the Ohio cemetery.
