ORVAL MATHERLY
Orval "Bernie" Matherly, 76, of Pella, a native of Grinnell, died Saturday, Feb. 22, at Pella Community Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with the Rev. Sam Reaves officiating. Organist was Naomi Reaves, and pallbearers were Raymond, Ronald and Steve Harris, Jeff and Jody Matherly, and Ron Minear.

He was the son of George and Nora May Fullerton Matherly and was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Grinnell. He was a graduate of Grinnell High School.

On Aug. 6, 1937, he was married to Dorothy Mitchell in Grinnell. They lived in Grinnell where he was superintendent of the city water works. They moved to Swartz Creek, Mich., in 1972 and managed an apartment complex. Mr. Matherly retired in 1980.

He is survived by three sons, Orval of Houston, Texas, Terry of Flint, Mich., and Glenn of Pella; one daughter, Mary Volner of Eugene, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchidlren; one brother, Glen of Marion, Ohio; and one sister Beulah Harris of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one brother, Delmar.

Memorials may be made to the Pella Sheltered Care Unit and sent in care of P.O. Box 368, Grinnell 50112
