BERTHA GILBERT FUNERAL SERVICES CONDUCTED TODAY

Bertha M. Gilbert, 80, of Grinnell, died Tuesday forenoon at a local hospital following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held this afternoon (Thursday) from the James-Schalinske Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester E. Custer, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Organ music was provided by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner.

Serving as pallbearers were Bill Norris, Kenneth Norris, Gene Gilbert, George Gilbert, Dick Van Draska and Francis Vander Linden. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.

The daughter of James and Martha Hillman, she was born June 30, 1882 in Kansas. At the age of 16, she came to the Grinnell Community. On December 19, 1900, she was united in marriage with George F. Gilbert, who preceded her in death on December 26, 1932.

Mrs. Gilbert was a member of the Methodist church.

She was the last surviving member of her family, being preceded in death by her husband and parents; her three children, Sherman Gilbert, Ruth Norris and Edith Watkins; and one grandson, Max Gilbert.

Survivors include eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

NOTE: This obituary contains several errors. Bertha was the daughter of John Sidney Hillman and Mary Melissa Baber. Bertha was born near Deep River, Poweshiek Co. Iowa, not Kansas. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers and a sister. She had one brother surviving her.
I know these corrections to be factual as Bertha Hillman Gilbert is my great-grandmother.
