Katherine Slagle Young, 76, of 1323 Guest Street, died Saturday April 5, 2008, at Wesley Long Hospital, after a long period of illness.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Thursday night, April 10, at Lambeth Troxler Funeral Service.

A funeral service will be held in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2008, with Rev. David Partington and Rhonda Davis officiating. Dr. Michael Young will deliver a eulogy. A reception will follow in the Virginia Gilmer room immediately after the service. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park, High Point Road, Greensboro, NC.

Katherine was born June 13, 1932, in Grinnell, Iowa, the oldest daughter of Lodi Mae Tarvin and Elmer Vern Slagle. Katherine and her family moved to western Kansas, where her father was stationed during WWII. Katherine attended public school in Hugoton, Kansas. She earned an AB Degree in Sociology from Fort Hays Kansas State University and a Masters in Library Science from Vanderbilt University. She was a librarian at the University of Nebraska Medical School when she met her future husband.

During her professional career, she established a library for the Dental School at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, and for the School of Nursing at Forsythe County Hospital, Winston Salem, NC. While working with the Girl Scouts, she began as an adult helper and rose to rank of Service Team Chairman, the highest rank for a volunteer.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Harry Young of the home; son Francis Slagle Young and wife Suzanne of Greensboro; daughter Bridget Young Elmlinger and husband James of Fredericksburg, Virginia; grandsons Sean Nelson Elmlinger and Kerg-Harrison Young; sister Alice Slagle Barnard and husband Robert of St. Joseph, Missouri; brothers Douglas Vern Slagle and wife Merle and Roy Elmer Slagle and wife Jane, of Streetman, Texas; and special friend Beverly Ann Cooper, Greensboro, NC.

The family requests that any memorials in her memory be given to the arthritis or diabetes organization of your choice or to the music department of the First Presbyterian Church.
