Pugh rites held today

Vilet B. Pugh, 68, of Grinnell died Friday morning at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services for Violet Pugh were held at 11 a.m. today (Monday) at the First United Presbyterian Church in Grinnell, with the Rev. Daniel Ogata, pastor of the church, officiating.

Organist was Joyce Wedlock.

Pallbearers were Craig McClure, Kevin McCartney, David Pugh, Richard Pugh, Mac McClure, and Iven Waterman. Honorary bearers were Wayne Davis II, Norman Davis, Paul Pugh, Tom Pugh, James McClure, Mark Deppe, John Pugh, Brent Deppe, Kris Waterman, and Terry Davis.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Born July 26, 1910 in Bavina, Colo., she was the daughter of Dr. John J. and Minta Jones Spencer. She moved to North Dakota with her family, and in 1926 moved to Grinnell, where she attended schools.

On July 8, 1929, she married Roy Norris Pugh in Montezuma. The couple farmed west of Grinnell and, later, near Montezuma.

The couple moved to Grinnell in 1961 to make their home. She was employed by Grinnell College for 13 years in the housekeeping department.

She is survived by her children, Wayne A. Davis of Tulas, Okla., Mrs. Donald (Bernice) McCartney of Des Moines, Larry W. Pugh of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Roger (Donna) McClure of Montezuma, Mrs. Norman (Elaine) Waterman of Melbourne, and Mrs. Donovan (Marilyn) Deppe of Newton; two brothers, Raymond and Jack Spencer, both of Seattle, Wash.; and 22 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son, Roy R. Pugh; two brothers; and two sisters. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1978
