The Montezuma Republican, June 28, 1945.

John HOOVER Died on Prison Ship. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse HOOVER of Grinnell received a letter from the Navy Department telling them of the death of their son, John, Phml/c, who had been a prisoner of the Japs since December 1941. The letter stated that John had been placed on board a Jap frieghter en route to Japan which was torpedoed and sunk off the eastern coast of China on October 24, 1944. The ship had no mark indicating it bore prisoners. Hoover enlisted in 1938 and had been attached to the 4th Marine Division. He was taken prisoner at the Canacoa Hospital at the Cavite Naval Base in December, 1941, and held in the Billdad Prisoner of War Camp until placed on board the ship where he met his death.
