The Montezuma Republican, Thursday, August 24, 1939. Judge John Frank TALBOTT Dies at California Home. Pioneer Resident's Death Comes Following An Illness of Several Months. Judge John Frank TALBOTT died Wednesday morning at his home in Santa Ana, Calif. following a several months' illness. His son, John E. TALBOTT of Brooklyn, arrived the day before, called there by his father's serious illness.

John Frank TALBOTT was born in Brooklyn, Oct. 9, 1855, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert TALBOTT. His grandfather, John J. TALBOTT, was one of the first settlers in this part of Poweshiek County and came here with his family in 1846.

Judge TALBOTT was reared on the home farm near Brooklyn. His education was acquired in the Brooklyn schools from which he graduated. He carried on the work on his father's farm and read law in the office of John T. SCOTT, pioneer lawyer of Brooklyn. Mr. TALBOTT also taught rural school during that period.

In 1877, he was admitted to the bar and was elected justice of the peace soon afterwards. He practiced law for ten years in Brooklyn with marked success. In 1887 the family moved to California, where they lived for three years after which they moved to Omaha.

In 1895 the family returned to Brooklyn, where Judge TALBOTT opened an office. In 1900 he was elected county attorney an office which he filled capably for two terms. In 1910 he was chosen judge of the sixth judicial district, comprising Jasper, Mahaska, Poweshiek, Keokuk and Washington counties. He held this office until he moved to California. In Santa Ana he was elected Judge of the Municipal Court, a position which he held several years.

In 1879 Judge TALBOTT was united in marriage to Miss Nellie BROWN, daughter of Judge George BROWN of Mississippi.

Four children were born to them, all of whom survive and who live in Brooklyn. They are: Frank, Mrs. Mabel SIMERAL, John E., and Mrs. Jennie SCHMITZ. The boys have both followed their father in his chosen profession. Mrs. TALBOTT died in Brooklyn about 25 years ago.

Judge TALBOTT was a member of the Episcopal Church, a Mason, and member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.

He was a prominent and active member of the State Bar Association for many years. Politically he was a republican and served as chairman of the county central committee. He also served on the school board here for 12 years. Judge TALBOTT was for many years accorded a foremost place in the legal profession of the county. He was always interested in the cause of education and readily advocated any project which tended toward the development of the community in which he lived.

Twenty-one years ago Judge TALBOTT was married to Miss Rae McKEAN of California, who survives. They lived in Brooklyn a year or two before they left for California. Judge TALBOTT is survived also by one sister, Mrs. Zeke SMITH of Santa Ana.

Funeral services were held in Santa Ana at two o'clock Friday afternoon, followed by interment also in Santa Ana.--Brooklyn Chronicle.
