Recently Caused Thrill At Winfield,

Handcuffed.

E.T. "Monk" Haynes, former popular Grinnell boy is making a record for himself at the airport at Winfield, Kas. One of "Monk's" latest achievements is piloting a plane for chasing bank robbers. The plane is always ready to leave the municipal aviation field at a minute's notice and is a part of the equipment of the Cowley county sheriff. Mr. Haynes, acts as deputy to Sheriff Elmer Chamness and another deputy is trained to handle the machine gun which the aero-plane carries. More than sixty vigilantes are scattered throughout Cowley county to cooperate on land with the air patrol in pursuit of bandits.

The article which we print blow gives a vivid description of Haynes' latest activities.

"Looping an airplane handcuffed is a feat which few pilots have the courage to attempt, but Pilot E.T. Haynes proved to 3,000 spectators on the municipal landing field Sunday afternoon that it can be done. Such an exhibition never has been given at Winfield before and there are few instances, if any, where a pilot ever has attempted such a daring stunt.

His wrists securely bound in the steel bracelets and locked by Chief of Police Fred Hoover, Winfield's intrepid flier took the air. After several climbing turns the ship gained an altitude of 1,500 feet, then it began to drop. One loop followed another until five were executed by the handcuffed pilot. Not until the plane was safely back on the field were the wristlets unlocked.

Sergeant C.G. Buton, as good as his word, gave the spectators all that they had missed last Sunday and more. The Playboy of the Sky, his wrists in handcuffs, climbed fearlessly over the wings of the fuselage of the ship. At a dizzy altitude he climbed beneath the ship on the landing gear and while Pilot Haynes maneuvered into a loop Buton held on to the landing gear braces. The pull of gravity was so strong on the flip that the sergeant's hands were cut on the steel frame work of the landing gear.

As a third act in the exhibition Playboy and Air Nut Ace Haynes went up for a few tricks. With a .38 caliber revolver, Pilot Haynes attempted to shoot Buton from the lower wing where the sergeant was doing the Charleston. The revolver was loaded with blank cartridges."
