HE REMEMBERS SHILOH

J.H. Kellenbarger Recalled That Thursday was Anniversary of Famous Battle

THREE SHILOH SURVIVORS STILL LIVE IN GRINNELL

P.D. Burton and Jacob Wisecarver Were Also There--Mr. Kellenbarger was Wounded

Yesterday's warm sun, reminiscent of southern heat, reminded, J.H. Kellenbarger, one of Grinnell's Civil War veterans that it was the anniversary of the battle of Pittsburgh Landing, more often called Shiloh, where the Union troops, attacked by overwhelming numbers and at first driven back in confusion, rallied and finally drove back the Confederates in one of the greatest battles of the war. Mr. Kellenbarger recalls the historic peach orchard where he and his comrades stood firing with their clumsy muskets at an enemy who had the advantage of being armed with rifled guns.

Mr. Kellenbarger informs The Herald that there are two other veterans, besides himself, in Grinnell who fought at Shiloh; P.D. Burton and Jacob Wisecarver. Mr. Burton and Mr. Kellenbarger were in the battle the first day when the fighting was fiercest. Mr. Wisecarver was with Buell's troops who reinforced Grant's exhausted troops the night following and turned the tide of battle the second day.

Of the second day's fighting Mr. Kellenbarger knows only by heresay for just at evening of the first day he was out of action by a minie ball wound in his right shoulder.

In spite of the ravages of war Mr. Kellenbarger gets around with an activity becoming a younger man. He says that of his company of 100 men with which he went to war only eight now survive.
