Nellie Mae Barnes, 90, of Griswold died Saturday, Nov. 9, at the home of her son, Robert. She had been in failing health about two years. The daughter of Gilbert G. and Susan (Corderman) Silkett, she was born Sept. 7, 1901, and was married May 18, 1926 to William Earl Barnes. They farmed in the Griswold area. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and the Griswold Civic Club. Surviving are two sons, Richard R. Barnes and his wife, Barbara of Memphis, Tenn., and Robert L. Barnes and his wife, Betty J., of Griswold; a daughter, Loretta Montgomery and her husband, Robert, of Iowa City; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 11 great, great grandchildren, and a sister, Lillie Bell Buss of Clarinda.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Earl, in 1963; a stepdaughter, Arlene Drake and her husband Wallace, and a sister, Olive Marie Cable. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Wagler Funeral Home with Pastor Marcus Englehardt of Clarinda officiating. Donna Leighton was organist. In charge of flowers were Calvin and Phyllis Steffen and Jeanne Vance. Casketbearers were Charles Barnes, Jack Drake, Scott Drake, Rich Shearer, David Drake and Kyle Drake. Interment was in the Griswold Cemetery.
