Earl Barnes, a well known and longtime resident of the Griswold community, passed away after noon this Tuesday. Earl Barnes was born in Wright Township, northwest of Griswold on March 30, 1890, the son of the late William and Barbara Bitner Barnes. At his passing he had reached the age of 73 years, 4 months and 20 days. He grew to manhood in this community and was united in marriage in 1912 to Miss Rachel Smith, who passed away in 1919. On May 18, 1926 Mr. Barnes was united in marriage to Mae Silkett of Griswold and they have resided on a farm about four miles west of Griswold for many years. Mr. Barnes was a member of the Methodist Church. He was a loving husband and father and a friend to everyone who came into contact with him. Left to mourn his passing are his widow and four children. The children are: Mrs. Wallace (Arlene) Drake of Walnut; Mrs. Loretta Peterson of Iowa City; Richard Barnes of Memphis, Tennessee; and Robert Barnes of near Griswold. Also surviving is one brother, Paul, living at Nevada, Missouri. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, an infant son, one sister, Mrs. Wayne Myers of Red Oak, and a brother, Ralph Barnes, who died many years ago.
