John G. Hyers
(October 22, 1837 – October 10, 1903)

Oakland Acorn, Oakland, Iowa, Thurs., Oct 15, 1903, p.4, col.6
Obituary
Saturday morning, Oct 10, 1903, at the home of his son, William, in Council Bluffs, death came to John G. Hyers, one of Oakland’s aged and respected citizens. Death was not unexpected, as the deceased has been growing more feeble day by day for several weeks past. He had been a constant sufferer for many years, having been afflicted with bronchitic and lung affliction, these being the direct cause of his death. Mr. Hyers also suffered constant pain caused by a fall he received several years ago, falling or being thrown from a load of hay, dislocating the thigh joint, producing a lameness from which he never recovered. The deceased was born in Decatur, Indiana, Oct 22, 1837. At the time of his death he was aged 65 years, 11 months and 18 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Eggison, April 24, 1863. To this union was born four children, three of whom are living – William of Council Bluffs, Ia; Mrs. Effie Baker, of Ute, Ia; and Mrs. Ella Frantz, of Oakland, Ia.
Mr. Hyers was a kindly spirited man, making no enemies, “with love to all and with malice toward none.” He never stood identified with any religious organization, but he was a believer in Almighty God, ever trusting in His infinite mercy. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, one son, two daughters, grandchildren, relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Christian church, Oakland, Ia, Monday afternoon, Oct 12, 1903
