John Henry
(September 23, 1823 – August 14, 1903)

Oakland Acorn, Oakland, Iowa, Thurs., Aug 20, 1903, p.5, col.3
Obituary
Mr. John Henry was born Sept. 23, 1823, in Derry County, Ireland. He died at his home, eight miles northeast of Oakland, Aug. 14, 1903. In the year 1847 Mr. Henry came to the United States settling in the state of Indiana where he remained for several years. He then came to Iowa, settling in Scott County and in 1890 came to Pottawattamie County. He leaves an aged wife and six children, three sons and three daughters to mourn his departure. With the exception of one daughter, the family all live in the vicinity of Oakland. Mr. Henry had been a life-long member of the Presbyterian church and a very active and faithful worker in the Lord’s Vineyard until failing health compelled his absence from the Lord’s House, which services he very much missed. He was until he moved to another neighborhood an elder in the Columbian Presbyterian church where his many services and Christian labors endeared him to all. With him the church came first. Nothing was allowed to interfere with what he regarded his duty to his God and his church. His was a life that has made the world better for having lived in it, and his death seems like a great calamity, although he had reached the good old age of “four score” years. The funeral services were held on Monday at the home conducted by Rev. W. E. Kunz, and were unusually well attended. The interment was made in Oakland cemetery the funeral cortege being exceptionally large.
