Obituary
Mary Ellen Stout was born July 4, 1841, near Ft. Madison, Lee County, Iowa. She was married to John Emmett, Jan 17, 1861. To them was born one child, Mrs. Mary Jane Judy. Mr. Emmett died Nov 21, 1864. On March 7, 1866, she united in marriage with Wm. Coleman. This union was blessed with eight children, five of whom are living, G. R. Coleman, of Omaha, Neb; Chas. H. Coleman, of Ramona, Ind Ter’y [Indian Territory]; Theodore Coleman, of Oakland; Mrs. Ella Kingman and Bertha Coleman, of Avoca, Ia. Two of the children died in infancy, and one, John Coleman, grew to manhood and died a few years ago. The family came to Pottawattamie County in September 1882, and lived for several years on a farm west of Oakland. In 1890 they moved to Oakland and have resided here ever since. Sister Coleman united with the church at the age of seventeen, and maintained a faithful Christian life to the end. Since residing in Oakland she has been identified with the Methodist Episcopal church at this and was one of the most faithful and efficient members. Hers was a sincerely devoted and consecrated life, and she performed diligently all the tasks that fell to her. She gave willingly of her means and time to all benevolent work. She departed this life during the night of June 1, 1903. She was apparently quite well when she retired in the evening, and no one could have suspected that the sad end was so near. She never awoke from her sleep. When her husband went to call her in the morning, her spirit had taken its flight. Without suffering or pain her soul had quietly passed out of its tenement of flesh, and her face bore the expression of calm and peaceful restfulness. The whole community mourns with the afflicted husband and children in their great loss, and extends to them a heartfelt and genuine sympathy.
