Obituary
On Tuesday morning, May 12, 1903, one of Oakland’s old and respected citizens quietly and peacefully passed away from earthly scenes into the great beyond. John C. White was born August 17, 1836, at Drury’s Landing, Rock Island County, Illinois. He died at his home in Oakland, Ia., May 12, 1903, aged 66 years, 8 months and 15 days. He was the youngest child in a family of nine children, consisting of five boys and four girls. Only one of the number surviving him, Mrs. Albino Palmer, of Woodbury County, Iowa. August 17, 1861, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Genson. The union was blessed with ten children, six of them now living as follows: Mrs. Bertha Miksell, of Tama County, Iowa; George, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mrs. Ellen Goff, Will, Bert and John, of Oakland, Ia.
Last fall Mr. White, in company with his wife, went on a visit to relatives and friends living in Tama County, and while on this visit he was stricken with paralysis, and from this sickness he never fully recovered. After returning to his home he continued in falling health, growing gradually weaker until death came releasing him from his suffering. He bore his sufferings very patiently, without murmur or complaint, willing and ready to answer death’s summons when called upon. He was a loving husband, a kind and affectionate father, a true friend, a good neighbor and a loyal citizen. He leaves a wife, six children, a number of relatives and many friends to mourn his loss. Funeral services were conducted from the home by P. H. Green, Wednesday, May 13, at 2 p.m.
