Journal Herald, Avoca, Iowa, Thurs., Nov 18, 1909, p.1, col.5
Death of Mrs. G. W. Poland
Grandma Poland died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. T. Baker, at Sumner, Bremer County, Iowa on November 12, 1909, aged eighty-nine years, eight months and three days. Mary A. McShane was born in Virginia on March 9, 1820, and was united in marriage to G. W. Poland in 1848. To this union was born four children. In 1856 she in company with her husband and family moved to Iowa and settled in Washington County, Iowa. In 1873 they moved to Avoca, Iowa, her home until December 1909, nearly a year ago, when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. M. T. Baker, at Sumner, Iowa. The deceased always lived a Christian life and was a member of the United Brethren church. Mrs. Poland is survived by two children, a daughter, Mrs. M. T. Baker, of Sumner, Iowa, and Dennis Poland, near Avoca, Iowa. The funeral services were held Sunday at 2 o’clock from the Presbyterian church and the remains laid to rest in the Avoca cemetery. Weep not that her toils are over, weep not that her race is run, God grant we may rest as calmly, when our work, like hers is done. Till then we yield with gladness, our mother to Him to keep, and rejoice in the sweet assurance, “He giveth His loved one sleep.”
