Jerald L. "Jed" McDermott, age 70, Neola, Iowa, passed away at his home on Friday, September 23, 2011, with his family at his side.

Jed was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on June 11, 1941, to Donald J. and Alma M. (Dahl) McDermott and graduated from St. Joseph High School. Jed served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War and was united in marriage to Caroline Martin on July 11, 1964, at St. Patrick's Church in Neola. He worked for many years at Boyer Body Shop and Tri-Center Schools, retiring in 2003. He served for 25 years on the Neola Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the American Legion and St. Patrick's Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lyle and his wife, Mary Ann; grandson, Preston; and his brother-in-law, Pete Turner.

Jed is survived by his wife of 47 years, Caroline; daughters, Lisa Kenney, of Neola, Barbara McDermott, Council Bluffs, Julie Schechinger and husband, Monte, of Westphalia, Iowa; sons, Jeremy and wife, Jennifer, of Minden, Iowa, Jason and wife, Sarah, of Neola; granddaughter, Ashley Ebersole and husband, Justin; grandsons, Matthew and Mitchell Schultz, Kaden and Spencer McDermott, Brayton Schechinger, Gryphen McDermott; granddaughter, Brylee Schechinger, great-granddaughter, Vaeda Bryan; sisters, Bonnie Turner, Patricia Fischer and husband, Dean; brothers, Dan and wife, Carolyn, all of Neola and Jim and wife, Myrna, of Council Bluffs, nieces and nephews.

Visitation Monday, 5 to 8 p.m., with Christian Wake Service at 6 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Neola.

Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday 10:30 a.m., also at church.

Interment Neola St. Patrick's. Memorials to the church, Neola Volunteer Fire Department and Hospice with Heart.

Luncheon will follow back at the church hall.

Interment Neola St. Patrick's, with Neola American Legion Military Honors.
