OAKLAND - Evelyn Iola Strong, 93, of Oakland died April 2 at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Oakland where she had made her home the last six years.

She was born Nov. 16, 1909, in rural Hancock to Frank and Mabel (Warner) Sifford. She attended country school and graduated from Hancock High School in 1927 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught rural school for six years in the Hancock area. On Sept. 4, 1934, she married Albert Strong and they lived on the family farm east of Oakland until Albert's death on Dec. 23, 1974. Evelyn continued to live on the farm until 1975 when she moved to Atlantic for a short time. She returned to Oakland in 1977.

Evelyn enjoyed her family, music, people, poetry, attending church, handwork, raising flowers and being a homemaker, sewing, playing the piano and writing poetry. She was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, 50-year member of Eastern Star, Columbia Community Club, Senior Citizens, Mothers Study Club and active in the Shady Lawn Senior Center. She played piano in "The Shady Lawn Hot Shots Band" and enjoyed doing this immensely.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Marie Hansen.

Survivors include her son, Herbert Strong, and wife, Carol, of Oakland; her grandchildren, Mark Strong of Council Bluffs and Emily Strong of Oakland; and her "sister-cousin" Bonnie Brasel of Omaha who made her home with Evelyn's parents; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation with the family will be Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. with Eastern Star service at 8 p.m. at Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland. The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Oakland United Methodist Church in Oakland. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland.
