Michael C. Chaput, M.D.

Funeral Mass for Michael C. Chaput, M.D., 57, of Council Bluffs will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. Raphael Masabakhwa, associate pastor, officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Lauritzen Botanical Gardens in Omaha.

Dr. Chaput died March 27 in Sedona, Ariz., while hiking in the mountains.

He was born July 21, 1945, in Detroit to Robert and Mary Ann (Klapperich) Chaput. He previously lived in Detroit, Evanston, Ill., and Johnstown, Pa., moving to Council Bluffs 25 years ago. He was a 1963 graduate of University of Detroit High School. He graduated from the University Notre Dame with a bachelor of science degree in 1967. He then graduated from the Loyola-Strich Medical School in 1971.

He was staff anesthesiologist at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital from 1976-89, a staff anesthesiologist at Jennie Edmundson Hospital from 1976-2001 and was also the chairman of Department of Anesthesia at Jennie Edmundson from 1994-2001. He went on sabbatical in September 2001 and was scheduled to return in May 2003. He also was employed by Medical Anesthesiology Associates. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Medical Society and the Iowa Society of Anesthesiologists.

Dr. Chaput and his wife, Carole, were married May 21, 1971.

Survivors in addition to his wife include five daughters, Sara Knoke and husband, Daniel, of Encinitas, Calif., Maureen Bensing and husband, Tom, of Sunnyvale, Calif., Carolynn Fischer and husband, Patrick, of Chicago, Lauren Chaput of Council Bluffs and Martha Chaput of Des Moines; three grandchildren: Foster and Paige Bensing and Jake Knoke; two sisters, Mary Smith and husband, Rick, of Birmingham, Mich., and Patti Schiebold and husband, Matt, of Royal Oak, Mich.; three brothers, Tim Chaput and wife, Sherry, of Plano, Texas, Tom Chaput and wife, Annie, of Detroit and Chris Chaput and wife, Nancy, of Bloomfield, Mich..

A wake service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. John Bertogli, pastor, officiating, followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. The body will be cremated following the service. Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
