In Memory: Gladys Kaven

Gladys Kaven, 90, of Walnut died July 5 at Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center.

Gladys Clare Kaven was born on April 19, 1912 on a farm north of Minden, Iowa. She was one of ten children in the family of Henry and Emma (Tradel) Wohlert.

She was baptized on July 14, 1912 and confirmed on March 28, 1926 in the Minden Congregational Church. '

Gladys married Orvel Kaven on November 29, 1933 in Treynor, Iowa. They lived their entire lives in Minden, where both were active in the Minden Community Club and Orvel served as mayor for many years.

Gladys enjoyed her home, traveling, needlework and playing cards. She was an excellent cook and liked to entertain in her home.

She was active in the Women's Fellowship of the Minden Congregational Church (later the Minden United Church of Christ). She enjoyed bowling and served as secretary of the bowling league.

Orvel died on November 22, 1992. Gladys maintained good health and lived in her Minden home until October of 2001, when she moved to Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut, Iowa.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Orvel, her five brothers (Julius, Herbert, Elmer, Floyd ard Irvin "Shorty") and four sisters (Matilda Bauerkemper, Alice Thomsen, Esther Stender and Dorothy Westphalen).

Survivors include nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation was held Sunday evening at Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca. Funeral services were held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Minden United Church of Christ with the Rev. Denny Peterson officiating. Burial was in the Minden Cemetery.
