In Memory: Elmer C. Jensen

Funeral for Elmer C. Jensen, 73, of Shelby was held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Shelby United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vicki Steffes officiating.

Mr. Jensen died April 15 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.

He was born in Avoca and graduated from Fairview No. 8 country school. He had lived in San Diego, on a farm south of Harlan, in Avoca and Hancock before moving to Shelby in 1958.

He served in the U.S. Navy in San Diego, Guam and Coronado, California, and operated military landing craft during the Korean War and received the Korean Service medal and Good Conduct medal.

He was a farmer, retiring in 1971, and worked for Jacobs Corp., retiring in 1991 as operations coordinator. He was a member of the Tennant United Methodist Church in Shelby County, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 941 and the Iowa Farm Bureau and was a director in 1976-1979 for the Shelby County Farm Bureau.

Mr. Jensen and his wife, Frances, were married 49 years.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Cindy South of Council Bluffs and Defuse DeSchamp and husband, Clifford, of Perry; three sons, David and wife, Kim, of Smyrna, Georgia, Rich and wife, LuAnn, of Shelby and Garland of Avoca; two sisters, Elsie Baker of Council Bluffs and Betty Paulsen of Atlantic; a brother, Robert, of Tennant; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family was held with a prayer service at Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery with military rites conducted by Shelby County VFW Post No. 941.
