In Memory: Lloyd K. Rief

Lloyd K. Rief, 85, of Council Bluffs died May 24 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital.

He was born in Honey Creek and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1934. He served in the Iowa National Guard. He farmed in the Beebeetown area from 1936 to 1952 and was a salesman for Peet Feeds and Gooch Mills. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Cobia Lodge No. 631, A.F. & A.M. He served in the Council Bluffs Police Reserve for many years, attended FBI training and had been a member of the national Sheriffs Association.

He was a candidate for Pottawattamie County sheriff and served for eight years as a Boomer Township No. 2 School Board director.

Mr. Rief and his wife, Hazel K. (Steele), were married December 31, 1935.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Kathleen Nielsen, and husband, Charles I., of Council Bluffs; two sisters, Margie Batterson and husband, Bob, of Columbus, Ohio, and Dorothy Lasko of Tennessee; two grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Private family services were held with the Rev. Anthony Paff and the Rev. Robert Boseck officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Cutler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be offered to St. John's United Church of Christ.
