In Memory: Verlee Peters

Verlee Anna Marie (Knudsen) Peters, 69, died April 10, 2000 at her home in Tennant.

She was born on March 26, 1931 on the Knudsen family farm at Jacksonville, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Kathrine Mortensen Knudsen.

She grew up in the Jacksonville area and was baptized and confirmed at the Jacksonville BethIehem Lutheran Church. She attended Jackson No. 4 country school west of Jacksonville through the eighth grade and then graduated from Harlan High School in 1949.

She married Harold Dean Peters on February 15, 1954 in the Jacksonville Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They had five children: Bonnie Jean, a baby girl who died in February of 1957, David Dean, Connie Ann and Ernest H.

After their marriage, they farmed north of Tennant until 1970 when they moved onto the Peters family farm. They lived there until 1998 when they moved to Tennant.

Verlee was a member of the Pioneer Country Club all of her married years and was a current member of the Immanuel Lutheran

Church in Harlan. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Shelby.

Verlee baked and decorated wedding cakes with her cousin, Alice Pieper, and her sister-in-law, Helen Knudsen, for many family member and friends for over 45 years.

Survivors include her husband Harold; four children, Bonnie and her husband Jim Utter of Bondurant, David and his wife Bonnie of Shelby, Connie and her husband Dale Schroder of Shelby and Ernest and his wife Lori of Portsmouth; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Lyle Knudsen and his wife Helen of Harlan and Merlyn Knudsen and his wife Jeannette of Jacksonville; her mother-in-law, Mildred Peters Quimby of Harlan; an uncle, George Mortensen of Elk Horn; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral ceremonies were held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, with the Reverend Jon Benson officiating.

Interment was at the Shelby Cemetery. Knutson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
