In Memory: Bernice I. Byer

Bernice I. (Swarner) Byer died in Sacramento, California on November 24, 2000. Interment was private.

She was born July 24, 1912 in Persia. The family home was in Drinkwater, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1917 the family moved to the state of Washington. In 1923 they returned to Iowa and Bernice graduated from Persia High School.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College and the Misner School of Speech and Drama. She worked as an elementary school teacher near Persia for three years.

In October of 1937 she moved to Sacramento, California and worked for the state of California. In 1940 she took a position with the Sacramento County Hospital as registrar of clinic patients.

On Sept. 20, 1941, Bernice married Raymond L. Byer, a California native, who worked at Crane Co.

In 1948, Mrs. Byer transferred to the Sacramento County Courthouse as a social worker.

In October 1951, Mrs. Byer left her position to join her husband in Anchorage, Alaska where he was employed. After a time she joined the staff of the U.S. Air Force at Elmendorf Air Force Base. She worked in the pediatric and health department clinic as a social worker and registrar of clinic patients.

In 1956 the Byers retired to Sacramento, California.

Mrs. Byer was preceded in death by her husband Raymond and her sister Marguerite F. Adams.

Survivors include her brother Raymond M. Swarner of Sacramento, her niece Janice C. Oszust of South Lake Tahoe, California, and her great nephews Bradford, Gregory and Christopher Oszust.
