In Memory: Viola T. Laing

Viola T. Laing, 92, of Persia, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000 at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.

Viola was born April 9, 1907 in Persia to Nicholas J. and Adeline T. (Pullis) Yochum. She attended Persia High School, graduating in 1925.

Viola married Arnold J. "Crip" Laing on November 24, 1925. They lived in Minden and Persia for thirty years and Viola worked for the Persia Phone Company as an operator for many years. Arnold died on May 5,1989.

Viola Lived at Peace Haven in Walnut before moving to Elm Crest in 1997. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith Karrel (Laing) Nihsen of Minden; grandchildren Laurie Schooley, Wendy Laing, Jeffrey Laing, Nick Nihsen, Kelly Martin, and David Nihsen; seventeen great grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son James Kenneth in 1990.

Funeral service was held Monday, March 6 at 11 A.M. at the Minden United Church of Christ with the Rev. David G. Borden, pastor, officiating. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery in Persia.

Hennessey-Schumacher Funeral Home of Logan was in charge of arrangements.
