In Memory: Leslie P. Lawrence

Private family services for Leslie P. Lawrence, 82, of Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan were held Wednesday at 1 P.M. at Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca.

Mr. Lawrence died September 25 in Harlan.

He was born 2 1/2 miles north of Portsmouth and previously lived in Logan, Traer, Elkader and Ames. He attended and graduated from Shelby Consolidated Schools and completed two years of classes at an extension of Iowa State University at Denison.

Mr. Lawrence was a farmer, sold insurance for Northwestern Life Insurance Co. and did maintenance work for Iowa State University. He was a charter member of the Harrison County Extension Service, Agriculture Stabilization Service and Soil Conservation Service. He was also a Farm Bureau Policy Board Member a member of both Harrison and Shelby County School Boards and a member of the Methodist Church. He was awarded the WOW-TV and Harrison County Extension Service Farm Family of the Year when the family lived on the farm at Logan.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; two daughters, Linda Powell and husband, Marc, of Traer and Laraine Ely and husband, Bernie, of SantaFe, New Mexico; two sons, Edward and wife, Kris, of McGregor and Roger and wife, Sandi, of Ames; three brothers, Ronald and wife, Marilyn, of Gillette, Wyoming, Russell and wife, Joyce, and Jess and wife, Mary, both of Council Bluffs; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
