Well Known Citizen of Oakland Dies

From Effects of Extended

Period of Heat
____________________________

At noon Wednesday, July 1, the
announcement of the suddent and un-
timely death of Marion Atkinson, a
well known and respected citizen of
Oakland, came as a shock to his loved
ones and many friends.

Francis Marion Atkinson, son of
Samuel K. and Mary E. Atkinson,
was born in Fremont county on the
Mound Spring farm near Sidney, Jan.
15, 1863; departed this life at Oak-
land Wednesday, July 1, 1931; age,
68 years, 5 months and 16 days.

At the age of 13 years he came
with his parents to Oakland (then Big
Grove), locating northwest of town
on the farm which his father pur-
chased from William Zentmice.

He was united in marriage to Miss
Ora Rust in 1886. She lived less than
a year. He was united in marriage to
her sister, Miss Ella Rust, in 1888.
To this union seven children were
born, two of whom survive, as fol-
lows: Miss Bessie of Atlantic, and
Clarence of Hancock. April 30, 1921,
he was united in marriage to Mrs.
Eloise Fowler, who with the children
mourn his departure.

Some few weeks ago he suffered an
attack of influenza, which left him in
a weekened condition. During the
extreme hot weather he suffered from
the heat. On the day of his death
he was plowing corn for J.E. Bender.
Near noon Mr. Bender went to the
field and as he came near he noticed
the horses were loose from the plow
and facing toward the well. As he
came nearer he noticed Mr. Atkinson
lying on the ground in an unconscious
state, yet holding to the lines. He
did all possible for the stricken man,
but it was too late, and in a few min-
utes the spirit took its departure.

Mr. Atkinson was of a kindly dis-
position, honorable and upright in all
his relations with his fellowmen, hav-
ing their confidence and respect. At
the time of his death he was serving
the community as ??? and
faithful to every trust reposed in him.

He leaves to mourn his departure
the loving wife and children; broth-
ers and sisters--John M. of Leth-
bridge, Alta., Richard L. of Council
Bluffs, Mrs. Hattie E. Carse of Oak-
land, Mrs. Emma B. Crandall of Ham-
burg; two grandchildren, Marjorie M.
and Carl Atkinson of Hancock, many
nephews and nieces, other relatives
and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the
Church of Christ Friday afternoon,
conducted by Judge J. L. Blanchard
of Council Bluffs, assisted by P. H.
Green. Favorite Hymns were sung by
a male quartet composed of E. P.
Harrison, Oran Timberman, W. W.
McRory and Frank Zentmire, with
Mrs. Ruth Luxford as pianist. Pall
bearers were J. C. Judy, C. H. Powell,
R. G. Penniston, A. C. Vieth, H. J
Brown and Ira McLaughlin. Inter-
ment was at Oaklawn.
