Van C. Smith

Van C. Smith, 82, of Council Bluffs died Feb. 12 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital.

He was born Jan. 9, 1921 in Esbon, Kan., to James M. and Leota W. (Micheal) Smith. He moved to Council Bluffs in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and he received the Bronze Star. He was a boilermaker on the Union Pacific Railroad for 24 years, retiring in 1989. He also owned Smith's Public Auction. He was a life member of DAV Chapter No. 5 and was Past President and Chaplain. He was also a member of NARVE and Local No. 663 Boilermaker's Union.

Mr. Smith and his wife, Georgia (Poulson), were married 60 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Evan C. Smith, and son, William Smith, in 1984.

Survivors in addition to his wife include one daughter, Linda M. Van Dusen, and husband, Robert, of Council Bluffs; one son, Danny C. Smith, and wife, Nancy, of Van Buren, Ark.; brother, Kenneth Smith, and wife, Rachel, of Lincoln, Neb.; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Smith, of Council Bluffs; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be tonight from 6 to 8 at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Chaplain Larry Sampier of Alegent Health Mercy Hospital Pastoral Care Department officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 2.

Memorials may be offered to the family.
