In Memory: Chris Berg

Chris Berg, 99, died January 28 at Salem Lutheran Nursing Home in Elk Horn.

He was born on August 13, 1903, in Sonderbork, Denmark, the son of Hans Peder and Eline Mortensen Christiansen. In 1925 he emigrated from Denmark to the United States.

Chris married Ella Sindt on August 28, 1935 in Ringstead, Iowa. They were the parents of four children: Kenneth, Donald, Melvin and Carolyn. Ella died in 1956.

Chris married Mary Belle Kern in January of 1965 in Shelby. Mary died in 1983.

He was a farmer for many years and upon retiring from farming in 1968 he opened Berg Radiator Repair in Shelby. He was a member of Shelby Lutheran Church.

Chris enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He also enjoyed summer picnics, where he could combine his two favorite pastimes, eating and talking with friends.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth and his wife Betty of Shelby, Donald of San Diego, California and Melvin and his wife Bonnie of Sacramento, California; one daughter, Carolyn Epp of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Ronald and his wife Sheri Berg; Erich, Lisa and Karen Epp; and, Stacey Berg; and one great grandchild, Ashley Sieh; along with other relatives and many friends.

Visitation with the family was held Thursday evening at Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca. Funeral service was at 1:30 p.m. Friday' January 31 at the Shelby Lutheran Church with Pastor Dale Jenson officiating.

Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery.
