In Memory: Gilbert E. Lacey Jr.

Gilbert E. Lacey Jr., Major (Ret.) U.S. Army, 76, of Elk Horn died February 2.

He was a long time resident of Council Bluffs He was born March 19, 1926, in Cumberland. He was a combat veteran of World War II, 661st Tank Destroyer Battalion.

He was preceded in death by beloved wife, Jean (Kemp) Lacey, October 10, 1992, and beloved second wife, Peggy (Borden) Lacey, August 5, 2001; his father, Gilbert Lacey, and mother, Esma Lacey, and brother, Roger, in infancy.

He is survived by a son, Rev. John Lacey of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughters, Sherry Lacey Gallagher and husband, Barry, of Great Falls, Montana, and Shelly Schauwecker and husband, Michael, of Tempe, Arizona; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; sisters, Marilee South and husband, Clair, of Cumberland and Ruth Melena and husband, David, of Peoria, Arizona; stepchildren, Michael Borden of Underwood, Rebecca Tiarks and husband, Darwin, of Okinawa; seven step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; stepsisters in law, Betty Stipes of Clarinda, Marcia Youngren and husband, Bob, of Kimberling City, Missouri, and Virginia Hunter and husband, Bill, of Clarinda.

Masonic service will be Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Grove Lodge 492 AF&AM, followed by family visitation. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery near Cumberland, with graveside military services by Iowa National Guard.

Memorials may be offered to Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn or Myrtue Memorial Hospital Building Foundation in Harlan.
