In Memory: Evelyn Buzzell

Evelyn Buzzell, 89, died January 30, 2003 at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.

She was born on a farm near Shelby on November 21, 1913, one of three children in the family of Fred C. and Mary Dorscher Petersen.

She was baptized and confirmed in St. John's English Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs. She graduated from high school in Fort Collins, Colorado and continued with her education over the years at Denver University.

Evelyn married Frank Buzzell on July 5, 1935. They lived on a ranch in North Park, Colorado for many years before moving to a farm at Fort Collins. After selling the farm, they worked at some resorts in Wyoming and Colorado before settling on their farm near Shelby in 1960.

Frank died in 1971 and Evelyn continued living on the farm. She was treasurer of the East Pottawattamie Farm Bureau for a number of years and won an award for her soil conservation practices. She was an accomplished chef. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank and a sister, Mary Lou Watkins. She is survived by a brother, Fred Petersen of Fort Collins, Colorado, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral ceremonies were held Monday, February 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca with Pastor Lou Hoger and Lay Assistant Wayne Paulsen officiating. Interment was in the Minden Cemetery.
