In Memory: Dorothy Jane “Byrd” Joyner

Dorothy Jane “Byrd” Joyner, 79, of Council Bluffs and formerly of Perry and Hutchinson, Kansas, died January 18.

She was born in Neola and graduated from Bayard High School in 1940, Iowa Western Community College in 1984 and Buena Vista University in 1987.

She served in the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer from 1943-46. She was an instructor at the U.S. Naval Storekeeper School in Milledgeville, Georgia, worked as a bookkeeper, business school instructor and food economist for 12 years at Guaranteed Foods.

She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Council Bluffs, where she was a youth and children’s choir and missionary leader.

Mrs. Joyner and her husband Ross were married 55 years.

Survivors in addition to her husband include a son, Ross Jr., of Council Bluffs; three daughters, Connie Joyner of Council Bluffs, Marilou Joyner of Kansas City, Missouri, and Bobette Joyner Pfander of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two brothers, Orval Byrd of Huxley and Duane Byrd of Whiting, New Jersey, a sister, Marjorie Arrowsmith of Raleigh, North Carolina; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family was held at noon Monday at First Assembly of God Church with the funeral following at 2 P.M. with the Rev. Shawn Oberg officiating. Burial was in the Neola Cemetery. Memorial may be offered to First Assembly of God or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Chapel of Memories Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
