Dr. William R. Spickerman

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The funeral for Dr. William R. "Bill" Spickerman, 77, of Greenville, N.C., were held Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Greenville.

Dr. Spickerman died Jan. 3. He was a native of Council Bluffs. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He received his undergraduate degree and master's degree in education from the University of Omaha. He received a second master's degree in mathematics from Xavier University in Cincinnati and a doctorate from the University of Kentucky. A resident of Greenville since 1967, he was a professor of mathematics at ECU for many years and retired in February 2002 as professor of computer science. During his tenure he was active in numerous professional organizations. He co-authored a textbook and published many papers in professional journals. He loved academia, research, teaching, and all scholarly pursuits.

Dr. Spickerman had a lifetime love of ballroom dancing, was active in dance clubs, and had served as president of the Greenville Cotillion. He was the current Commander of the American Legion Post No. 39 and was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Charles Gray Morgan Post No. 7032.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sylvene Spickerman; one sister, Catherine Coffey, of Canon City, Colo.

Burial was in Pinewood Memorial Park.
