Pioneer Mother Dies Saturday

Last rites for Mrs. Richard Hines, 89, were held at the Blust Bros. funeral home Monday with burial in Graceland cemetery.

Mrs. Hines was one of the pioneer women of this community, probably the oldest woman that was born and raised in Knox township. She was one of seven children born to Jacob and Mary Ann Wineland in an old log cabin on the old Wineland homestead just east of Avoca.

She was born on August 1, 1856 and died last Saturday evening at her home 2 ½ miles southeast of Avoca at the age of 89 years, 5 months, and 3 days.

She was married to Richard Hines on February 22, 1877 who preceded her in death on June 16, 1929.

She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Mrs. Lulu Vanderloo of Sioux City; Mrs. Charles Leslie of Avoca; two sons, Wilbur Hines of Avoca and Harry who lived with and cared for his mother. Other survivors are 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
