Joseph Elmer Bender
(September 17, 1852 - October 22, 1946)

Funeral services for Joseph E. Bender, 94, a pioneer resident of the Oakland community, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Oakland Christian church. Rev. Ivo. G. Randles was in charge of the rites.

Mr. Bender died Sunday at the home of his son, Howard, in Avoca, where he had made his home for the past several years. A native of a Westmoreland county, Pa., he came to Oakland many years ago and made his home here until moving to Avoca. He operated a nursery farm on the land now occupied by the Shady lawn cabin camp.

Special music for Tuesday’s services was sung by Mrs. Leonard Chambers and Mrs. Louise Williams. In charge of flowers were Mrs. Virgil Priest and Mrs. Carl Rodwell.

Pallbearers were P.G. Green, C.L. DeHart, James, Kimberly, S.V. Pleak, Joe W. Myres and Hugh Aldrich. Internment was made in Oaklawn cemetery.
