Oluf Rasmussen 1887-1945
Was Member of Avoca Draft Board

This community was saddened Saturday when it became known that Oluf “Ole” Rasmussen died that afternoon at the Jennie Edmundson hospital in Council Bluffs following a brief illness.

Ole was a member of the Avoca draft board since its inception and gave long hours of time and thought to the problems connect with selective service.

At the funeral services held Tuesday afternoon in Avoca, Col. Robert Fulton of the State Selective Service headquarters in Des Moines paid high tribute to the work of Mr. Rasmussen in administering the problems of drafting men for service in this community. Colonel Fulton rightfully said that Ole was a true patriot giving everything he had including his health to this country.

That Ole was well liked was attested to by the large crowd at the funeral services. We’ll allmiss him as he served his country well.

Oluf Rasmussen was born the son of Mr. and Mrs. Niels Rasnussen of October 7, 1887 at Gibson City, Illinois. He was united in marriage to Anna Petersen of Audubon on November 22, 1930.

After the death of his father in 1890, his mother moved to Elk Horn where he spent his boyhood years. He joined the army in 1917 and following his discharge returned to Irwin. He came to Avoca in January of 1921 and moved to the present farm home in 1932.

Those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife and son, Harry, and seven brothers and sisters; Mary of Coon Rapids, Minnie of Audubon, Hans of Harrison, Idaho, Anna of Audubon, Einer of Ladysmith, Wisconsin, Harry of Carroll, and Martin of Osage, plus many other relatives and a legion of friends.

Rev. Ivan Bachtell was in charge of the services held at the Blust Bros. Funeral Home here Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm. An honor of American Legionnaires from the Avoca post attended the services and then accompanied the remains to Audubon. Burial was in the Arlington Heights cemetery in Audubon.
