Killed by Lightning Sunday Afternoon
Was Hauling Baled Hay When Struck

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Shelby at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, July 25 for Clarence Woltman who was struck and killed by lightning at his home five miles northeast of Avoca at 2:20 pm last Sunday. Clarence was hauling baled hay in from the field with the tractor when the lightning struck and he fell off the tractor under the moving wheels of the load of hay. It is believed that he was instantly killed by the impact of the lightning; however, his head was crushed as the wheels of the rack passed over him. Interment was held in the Shelby cemetery.

Clarence Woltman was born April 21, 1911 and passed away at his home July 23, 1944 at the age of thirty-three years and three months. He was the youngest son of the late A.L. Woltman and wife Emma. He attended the Shelby consolidated school and later helped with duties on the farm. He was baptized and was a member of the Shelby Lutheran church.
On July 30, 1941 he was united in marriage to Meta Groepper. To this union one child, David, was born. He is survived besides his widow and son, by his mother, Mrs. Emma Woltmann; four brothers: Ernest, Adolph and Herman of Avoca and harry of Omaha; five sisters, Ella (Mrs. Walter Schroeder of Marne); Mamie (Mrs. Harry Hansen); Mabel (Mrs. Laubert Rogers; Edna all of Avoca; and Clara (Mrs. William Ronnfeldt).
