Miss Hattie J. King 1871-1945

Funeral services for Miss Hattie J. King, 73, were held at the Presbyterian church in Avoca, Saturday, February 3 at 2 pm with the Rev Howard Lindquist, pastor of the Presbyterian church in Atlantic in charge of the services. Burial was in Graceland cemetery.

Hattie J. King, oldest daughter of Charles O. and Mary L. King, was born at the farm home of her parents in Iowa county, Iowa, November 20th, 1871 and died January 31st, 1945 at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Vierck at the age of seventy three years, two months and eleven days.

In the spring of 1873, the family came to Pottawattamie county settling on a farm in Valley township where they continued to reside until the death of Mr. King in February 1887, when Mrs. King and her two daughters came to Avoca, which has since been their home.

Miss King was a graduate of the Avoca High School following which she taught in the rural districts. Later she assisted in the Vierek Art Studio for several years.

In early girlhood she united with the church and became an active worker in the church and Sunday school acting as superintendent of the Sunday school for some ten years, and was a regular attendant until her health began to fail.

She was a semi invalid the past five years and had been confined to her bed the last six months. Being of a cheerful disposition she was able to look on the bright side of life and was very patient throughout her long illness.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church, also a member of Avoca Chapter No 319 Order of the Eastern Star and Chapter G.C. of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and had held the highest office in both organizations.

She leaves to mourn her passing her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Vierck with whom she made her home also one niece, Harriet Vierck McCurum of St. Joseph, Missouri, two nephews, Charles J. Vierck of Columbus, Ohio and Robert K. Vierck of State college, Pennsylvania and their families as well as other relatives and many friends.

The following relatives and friends were in attendance at the funeral services for Miss Hattie King last Saturday.

Vierck and daughter, Delores; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Miller, Mrs. Henry Vorthanann all of Treynor, Iowa; Rev. and Mrs. Howard Lilndquist; Mrs. Elizabeth Emmert, Mrs. Margaret Hansen, Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Vierrck, Rozanne and Carolyn all of Atlantic, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Maason of Hancock, Iowa.
