Mrs. Emma Olive Stearns 1874-1944

Mrs. Emma Olvie Stearns, 91, died Friday morning, March 31, 1944, at the home of her daughter, Daisy Oldham, in Avoca, after a week’s illness.

Mrs. Stearns was born at Plymouth, Ohio, and was orphaned at the age of nine years. She was married to Edward F. Stearns in 1874. He died at Beaver City, Nebraska in 1915. To them were born four children: Charles D., Herbert A., and Mrs. Daisy Oldham, all of Avoca, who survive and Earl E. who died in 1903. Mrs. Stearns is also survived by nine grandchildren, and one brother, Eugene S. Carley of Spokane, Washington. Ernest Carley, pioneer settler of Macedonia, died some years ago.

Mrs. Stearns was a member of the Rebekah lodge, the Order of the Eastern star, the Avoca Garden club, the South Side Kensington club and of the Christian church of Beaver City, Nebraska. She was a pioneer settler of Furnace county, Nebraska, where she taught the first school in Richmond precinct.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm at her late home, with Rev. Ivan Bachtell of the Congregational church officiating. The body will be taken to Beaver City, Nebraska for interment following services to be held there Monday afternoon.
