Fred Tanke 1859-1941

A son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Tanke was born in Dauelsen, Hanover, Germany on October
26, 1859 and passed to his rest last Tuesday evening after reaching the age of 82 years, 11 months, and 16 days.

After having been baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church, Mr. Tanke came to Victor, Iowa, in his early youth, where he resided for several years before coming to Avoca. Here he was employed by Mr. Norton and learned the plumbing trade. He soon engaged in his own business which he followed for a number of decades in the Avoca trade territory. About 15 years ago he sold out his business but still remained active until recent years when his health did not permit him to be around any longer.

Mr. Tanke leaves to mourn his death 6 children and 4 step children: Mrs. Ben Schmidt (Elsie) of Brookings, South Dakota, Fred of Bruce, South Dakota, William of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. Theo Niemann (Lydia) of Avoca, Carl of Avoca, Mrs. William Gaines (Josephine) of Omaha, Mrs. Frank Pickerell of Avoca; Emma, Ella and Herman Mecklenburg, also 15 grandchildren.

Preceding his death were one daughter, Mrs. William Gormann, his two brothers, William and August and on only sister.

Mr. Tanke always took an active part in the community life in Avoca serving often as councilman or school director.

The funeral services were held this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 pm in the First Lutheran Church.
