George Lippold Senior 1870-1942

George Lippold, one of nine children born to William Lippold and his wife, Hanna Burkimler, was born November 1, 1870, in Le Clare, Scott county, Iowa and was called to his eternal rest last Wednesday morning (September 23, 1942) at 10:35 o’clock, having thus reached the age of 71 years, 10 months, and 22 days.

Mr. Lippold came with his parents to the Avoca community when he was about five years old. They bought much land in and about the present Lippold farm at that time. George grew to manhood in this community and later, himself, purchased much of his father’s land. He was married to Emma Wulf on February 19, 1896, and their union was blessed with eleven children: five boys and six girls. Even until recent years, the children were either still at home or lived in the immediate neighborhood.

The Lippold home was not only the common gathering place of the family and relatives, but also of the community. While Mr. and Mrs. Lippold were still on the farm, almost daily neighbors or visitors were entertained; often the number ran into the hundred that feasted at their table. Everyone who entered their home was assured a royal welcome and the entire family endeavored to make your stay pleasant and so make known the welcome that a desire to soon come again was born within your heart.

Mr. and Mrs. Lippold purchased a home this last spring in Avoca into which they moved on the 19th of May. About three weeks ago he suffered a heart attack from which he was slowly recovering when he was taken by a light stroke last Monday evening.

Mr. Lippold was baptized while still living in LeClaire, Iowa, but faith in God before the Altar of First Lutheran Church on April 29, 1934 in the churchly rite of Confirmation. Only several weeks ago, he also participated in the special Holy Communion Services which was sponsored by the Women’s Missionary society.

There remain to mourn his departure besides his widow, Mrs. Emma Lippold; five sons: George Kr. of Avoca, Daniel of Avoca, Fred of Hancock, Theodore of Taunton, Massachusetts, and Frank, who is still on the home place; six daughters: Mrs. Rudolph Bornholdt (Laura of Hancock); Mrs. Leonard Wohlhutter (Ann) of Harlan; Mrs. Rudolph Willett (Mary) of Avoca; Mrs. Peter Trziciak (Bessie) of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Russell Willett (Margaret) of White Plains, Maryland; also 14 grandchildren; and ennumberable (sic) other relatives and friends.

His four brothers, William, Henry, Gus, and Herman as also his four sisters; Mrs. John Russmann, Mrs. Alfred Zimmerman, and Mary and Lena Lippold have preceded him in death.
