Henry Edwin Patterson
(October 27, 1871 - March 26, 1949)

Last rites for Henry E. Patterson, a former mayor and member of the town council, were held from the congregational church Tuesday, March 29. Burial was in Graceland cemetery here. Store in Avoca were closed from 2 to 3 pm for the funeral services. Mr. Patterson died at his home in Avoca Saturday, March 26, following a brief illness.

Henry Edwin Patterson was born at Delavan, Illinois, on October 27, 1871, son of Joseph and Caroline Patterson. He came to Iowa at the age of 21 and has since lived in the Avoca vicinity.

After farming for a few years, he purchased a draying business in Avoca which he operated for several years. About 35 years ago he started the Patterson Ice Co., and was active in this business until last year when he retired.

He was united in marriage to Cora Wilson on August 5, 1908. He was a member of the congregational church in Avoca and the Modern Woodman of America.

To his many friends and associates in this community he was known as “Pat”. Mr. Patterson was a member of the local fire department and also served on the water department. Pat served two terms as Mayor of Avoca and several terms on the city council.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Cora; a niece, Mrs. Mary Pierce, and two nephews, Samuel and Arthur Eyers.
